It has been a busy summer for all our camogie teams who have been playing matches at home and away and training hard.
Westport Junior Camogie

Our Junior team competed in the Galway 12 aside league for the first time this year. Over all, players & management are satisfied in what resulted in a hugely successful campaign.
Westport finished second in the group, losing to Athenry in their opening game before winning their next two games V Abbeykmockmoy & Na Brideoga.
With just one team qualifying for the knockout stages, Westport just lost on in a semi final position. They now look forward to the Championship which will begin in the next couple of weeks.
Westport U16 Camogie

The U16 team are currently playing Galway Championship matches and have won their first outing away to Tuam.
Great to see the enthusiasm and committment from the girls for training and matches this season. Some of our players represented the club at county level this year with the U16 Mayo team reaching the final of their championship.
Westport U16 girls have been training hard all summer and enjoying their time playing camogie. We had our first game in the Galway league last Sunday against Craughwell. The final score was Westport 4-2 Craughwell 5-3 with some great skill and team work on display.
Our next outing is in Tuam next Tuesday 24th where we are looking forward to another competitive match.
On Thursday 24th we meet Cappataggle. There is also plenty of action ahead as we look forward to the Mayo league!
Some of our U16s competed at county level in the Tesco camogie championship reaching an All Ireland Final against Wicklow in Division D. Our younger U16s have the Féile competition to work towards and look forward to. It’s great to see the girls enjoying camogie at this level and challenging themselves to improve all the time.
Westport U14 Camogie
We have 34 U14s registered this year, which has us in the enviable position of being able to field 2 teams in the Mayo League. Our Naomh Padraig team have played both Castlebar and Na Brideoga to date, and come out on top in both these encounters. Our Cathair Na Mart team have played Na Brideoga, and Claremorris, coming away with a win over Claremorris, and within a goal, in a hotly fought contest with Na Brideoga in Tooreen.
The girls have enjoyed training games most Sunday evenings, and have been joined by some of the 2006 born U16s for these which has added some extra competitiveness. The improvements in skills, and fitness levels across the board are a joy to witness – 10 of our squad have been training, and playing with the Mayo U14 Panel, and have played in two inter county game V Donegal and V Tyrone in the National Development games to date.
We are looking forward to fielding a team in the Galway championship, dates TBC. Our 2007 born girls are also looking forward to taking part in the Féile Competition, which is an U15 local competition this year, in September.
Pauline Morrin, Aisling Guilfoyle, Louise Hastings and Gillian Broderick have been lucky to be joined by Seamus Dowling on occasions, who has reffed a lot of the training games. Emily Kelly has also done the honours and Ruth Crowley from our Junior team has joined us to share her goal keeping skills with our budding goalies.
Overall, a very enjoyable season to date, with plenty more action to come.
Westport U12 Camogie
This year as in previous years the U12 group is large enough to field two teams – Naomh Padraig & Cathair na Mart.
Each team has played two matches so far in the Mayo League with lots more fixtures to come in September. All the players give their all at training each week and it’s great to see the skills coming on as the girls progress through the season.
The teamwork displayed each week during training matches is so encouraging and we all have no doubt that each and every player will progress successfully to next season whether it be moving up to U14 for the older girls or progressing their skills at the their second year at U12.
Coaches Jen, Catherine, Caroline, Colm, Bea & Kim are so proud of the players and people the girls are becoming – great fun each and every week.
Thanks to Seamus Dowling and Katie Harmon for referreeing matches for us during the season so far.
Westport U10 Camogie

Our U10 group has no less than four teams this year as there are over 50 players! It’s fantastic to see all the girls enjoying their camogie and much praise to their coaching team – Sorcha Hellberg, Ruth Madigan, Tracy Lee, Louise O’Malley, Gary Goggins, Emer Farrell, Ben Walsh, Irene Riordan, Sinead Kennedy, Suzanne O’Brien and Sarah Walsh.
The Westport U10 Seals, Dolphins, Sharks & Whales have had some great matches with Claremorris, Castlebar, Na Brideoga and each other over the past couple of months.
Thanks to Megan O’Malley, Heidi O’Malley & Katie Harmon who regularly help out with training and also Emily Kelly, Anna Durkin & Orla Mulloy who have refereed matches.
With still some fixtures to play, much more camogie excitement lies ahead!
Wesport U8 Camogie Team

Our U8 fledgling camogs have had a wonderful season. With over 50 girls registered in this group, we thought we had a challenging season ahead of us. Thankfully, they proved us wrong.
What a fantastic group of young girls, many of whom have never had any prior exposure to camogie. They have all got to grips with the basic striking skills and have made great progress. So much so, many of the U8s are now attempting to strike the sliotar in the air!
They listen attentively and are eager to learn and develop new skills, amidst the giggles and newly formed friendships. They have been a pleasure to coach and we look forward to seeing them grow strong wings in the future. Mayo Camogs in the making.
Special thanks to the extended team of coaches, mentors and helpers who have given their time – Marie Claire, Lorraine, Anna, Ann, Aneta, Louise and also Barbara, Caroline, Seamus & Louise who also gave their time during the season. Our older club players who are helping with the U8s are proving to be great inspiration for them – Ruby, Eimear, Olwyn, Molly, Meabh & Katelyn.
